24 Hours In The ER On BBC America

For anyone luck enough to recieve BBC America,then you'll know all the awesome programming on there. My favorite is BBC News America, which is probaly the most objective, informative, and no-agenda newscast nowadays.

Anyways, there is a 14 episode dcoumentary series on BBC America called "24 Hours In The ER". Basically, for those that remember it, it's like "Trauma, Life in the ER", but this one takes place at one of the busiest ER's in London, at Kings College Hospital.

It was filmed 24 hours a day over 30 days with 70 strategically placed cameras.

It's quite fascinating to see the differences between the UK and US, and the similarities. It's also very interesting to hear the insight of the staff.

On my way home yesterday northbound on I-35 service road, I saw a small plume of smoke. I looked over to the southbound service road (Pflugerville-Round Rock TX) and saw a brush fire growing with heavy fuel and light wind gusts propelling the fire. No PD of FD on scene yet. Given the amount of smoke and the fact a brush unit was putting out a fire on the other side of the highway, I assumed 911 had been called. I noticed it was close to involving a cabinet company showroom and manufacturing plant.

The staff of the cabinet store were trying to keep the fire back with garden hoses and fire extinguishers. I also saw a large propane tank. I quickly turned arouud to the southbound service road , parked my car in a safe spot, and told the PD that there was a propane tank involved and to relay to incoming units and keep . I shouted to the people to get away from the fire, their methods were futile, and come to the front of the building to safety. The owner let me know that there was another large propane tank in the back of the facility. Upon arrival of the first due engine, I let the officer know about this, and they made maneuvers to keep the fire away from the building as much as possible. They did not have a water supply besides the onboard tank, and later on in the incident mutual aid engines had to relay pump with 5 inch hoses for about half a mile, to the nearest hydrant south of the fire. Until then, most departments relied on their booster tankers. Round Rock FD, an urban department, has a tanker that responds with its brush truck. This water was used efficently enough to protect the building. Star Flight, our EMS-Fire-Rescue helicopter, provided aerial surveillance to the IC, and then initiated water drops. As of this writing, the fire is 100% contained and out. Numerous departments from Travis and Williamson County were on scene, and did an amazing job of keeping the fire contained despite the size and protecting numerous structures and civilians., and quickly containing the fire and extinguishing it.

Lake Travis and the drought's effect

Lake Travis-Austin TX on 8-15-11...down 50 feet from it's normal level this time of year due to this exceptional drought we are experiencing....I wish Irene would bring her rain here, since the months and months of no rain is also creating a disaster.

Code 3 Collectibles Ceases Production

Very sad news. Code 3 has been dying in the past few years, mainly because of the extremly out of touch "leadership" of the company. They should have kept the original staff, or at least made an effort to, and kept to their enthusiastic original business model. Instead, they incorporated it into Funrise, forced all the Code 3 leadership and staff out, jacked their prices up beyond the reach of their avergage customer, ceased any type of collector relations, and hasn't done any R&D since at least 2007. Hopefully, someone can pick this up and bring it back to what it used to be.

Ardsley losing Sunnydale Farms, Village Cafe

VERY sad! Sunnydale Farms, the Lunchonette, and Yogi's businesses played a tremendous role in my famly's lives for many years. Growing up, my family would eat in the lunchonette multiple times a week. Their newstand was awesome. My grandmother was part of the "regulars" there who ate there almost every day, and played numerous scratch off tickets.. And we all patronized Sunnydale for a variety of items.We knew everyone who worked there, and they showed genuine concern for my family. You would always run into someone else from Ardsley you knew. Another piece of the"old Ardsley", that reflected it's former blue collar, working class village, is now history for a useless bank and resturant that serve wealthy inhabinants that have no idea how great Ardsley used to be.

ARDSLEY — When a major power outage hit the Northeast in 2003, business partners Jogi and Nirmal Singh turned on their generator and welcomed people into Sunnydale Farms, the convenience store they opened in 1973.

Nirmal Singh, who lives in Hartsdale, said he remembers customers coming into the store — the only business with power in the area — and putting their food in the store's massive walk-in cooler. Shoppers used flashlights to help look for canned goods and bread.

Next door to Sunnydale Farms is the Village Café, a retro luncheonette with counter seating and red leather booths. The Singhs acquired this business in the 1970s.

jetBlue Orders New Type Of Planes

Although these new planes are awesome, and I want to see what new markets they open us, jetBlue has lost me as a loyal customer and fans

They are no different then any other airline now. They constantly have performance problems, the customer service sucks, planes are filthy, and most of the time friends, family, and I have flown- the TV's didn't work or worked poorly. Since that's one of their main selling points, you'd think they would do something about that-especially since they own the company who installs and repairs these TV's! And the "free snacks"...you used to get a large portion of snacks and a full can of a beverage...now the snacks sizes are minicule, and they give you this tiny can for beverages.

They also don't have any plans to offfer Wi-Fi on board anytime soon.
We'll see how this pans out.....hopefully they will become the jetBlue I knew and loved once again. Not that I'm planning to travel anytime soon, but whenever I do,it will probaly be whoever has the direct flight at the lowest cost.

The Dodge Dakota Is Still In Production?

The Dodge Dakota is still in production?!?? I had a 2000 and a 2005 model with the V-8, and LOVED that truck, was perfect size, nice engine, nice interior options.....however, it still gets 14MPG.....really Dodge? You can't figure out a more fuel efficient engine? I'll stick with my 34MPG Ford Focus 2D SE until you do-but I'm not crossing my fingers. I'll wait until Ford comes out with a fuel efficient F-150...when money allows.

My New Uniden HomePatrol HP-1 And Car Mount

I had to sell my Uniden BCD 396T I got as a gift several years ago because it was too complicated for me and so were the digital systems....this brings back the fun of scanning...very easy and quick to use while on the road. I was waiting for the second generation HomePatrol but doesn't look like there is going to be one anytime soon.

So, with the proceeds from the BCD396T sale, I finally got a Uniden Home Patrol HP-1. This is how I mounted it in my car (2008 Ford Focus)..wanted easy accesiblity that I don't have to take my eyes off the road to look at. And, since I drive stick, it had to be out of the way of my armrest and shifter.

This is on a RAM mount flex arm that bolts to the seat bolt. This is the item and where I purchased it from:

Another Disturbing Dissapointment

Really dissapointed that I drove all the way to San Antonio tonight to see Disturbed, only to find out they cancelled due to an "emergency illness". I hope whomever is ill is getting better, and I wish them the best. However, I think the band would at least have posted something on Facebook or their site as to what happpened by now-there were a ton of pissed off fans.

The last two times I saw Disturbed they sucked anyways, David Draiman could hardly sing and barely had any stage presence or enthusiasm left that he used to have at his concerts, and now this. Thanks to Monster Energy Drinks and their label for forcing Disturbed on a relentless touring schedule for the past few years, which I feel ruined David's voice and led to the cancellation of this show.

Hopefully, the rumors are true and he really does live in Austin,TX now and will play Frank Erwin Center or something for his new hometown......

Wow, Los Angeles City FD has made a drastic change in their rescue fleet. Apparently, they have dumped both Ford and Wheeled Coach, and are now using Type I's with a Dodge Ram chasis and Braun Northwest-Northstar modules.

Mike Holmes Magazine

I really like Mike Holmes, and his TV show. He comes across as a knowledgable, modest, caring and genuine guy. Now, he's come out with a magazine, which was a nice suprise at the newstand.It's very well laid out, with some really good advice and informative articles.

"Snow Men" Pulled Suddenly From Discovery Lineup

Tonight, I was looking foward to the show, "Snow Men". I even made sure the DVR was set this morning. (see prior blog post)

And all of a sudden, Discovery pulls it completly from it's line up, only hours before it's set to air it's second episode. No explanation or notice to the fans.

Instead, they are airing "Wreck Chasers", the show that highlights the skells of the towing industry, and damaged the reputation of the towing industry that the show "Wrecked" built.

Well, then again, that freak family on Discovery Channel's sister network TLC with 19 kids who are now having a secons grandchild or the show that the guy has four wivees, or the little people who make chocolate, are more important priorities to them.

Ir seems Discovery is all about exploiting people for ratings, with the exception of a couple of shows.

They better bring it back! I feel bad for all the people who worked on that show.

Real ingridients? The last time I was at a Wendy's, after not having been in a while, I was very dissapointed. The 99 cent menu used to net you a good deal. Now, the portions are miniscule. And the regular menu items have also shrunk in size.

I'm sorry, you can't use "real ingridients" at that price....maybe at one time, before they were super processed into the "fry" they are now.

Rockstar Uproar Tour Houston

Catching up on many blog posts I'm behind on.

A few weeks ago, I attended the Rockstar Uproar Tour at the Cynthia Mitchell Woods Pavilion in Houston, TX. Headlining were Halestorm, Stone Sour, Avenged Sevenfold, and Disturbed.

This festival was very well put together, and the venue was in a very beautiful setting. It was an outdoor ampitheater. I sat two rows behind mid-left stage, under a cover. There was no mosh pit, only the "lawn" in the back.

First up was Halestorm. Pretty good band live.

Stone Sour was next, and only given a half hour to perform. Corey Taylor and Stone Sour are awesome, always tour with Disturbed, and wish they had gotten more time. Hope they headline a tour that comes this way.

Avenged Sevenfold took the stage next. I never really liked or listened to Avenged Sevenfold before. In fact, I kind of ignored their performance, anxious to see the next act, Disturbed. However, A7X has grown on me, and now I love their album. I really wish I had enjoyed their live performance more. There set was AMAZING, and the pyrotechnics unreal. I felt like my eyebrows were going to singe off. "Welcome To The Family"

And finally my favorite band, Disturbed. What was Disturbing was how disapointed I was with them. I love Disturbed, they always put on a great show and David always engages the audience. However, this time was different. I had hoped it wouldn't be like the show in Belton, TX a few years back. It wasn't. It was worse. David's voice is shot, and you can tell. He also seems to hate touring, and it is taking it's toll on him. They played a lot of medeleys, blending several songs into one. I really wanted to hear a few complete songs, and some more from the new album. Between each song there is a 30 second pause. David did nothing to engage the crowd, and didn't give any inspiring speeches like he usually does. I must say though, the lyrics to their new album are amazing and poweful. I've heard he's moving here to Austin, so maybe I'll see him in a better setting with songs that are better for his vocal cords. And they are still my favorite band, I just hope the record companies don't force Disturbed into touring until they fall apart.

A Sad End To A "Rookies" Episode-Officer Josh Norris

On the Crime And Investigation Network (used to be on A&E), there is this show called "The Rookies". It follows rookie police officers from the time the graduate the police academy, and their first few weeks on the job with their FTO until they get cut loose to patrol on their own.

This episode followed Officer Josh Norris, of the Jefferson County Sherriffs Office in Louisianna. He was 22 years old, and had struggled with his FTO, Officer Danny Bostic who was not impressed at first with Josh. He seemed at the end to improve on all the issues and earn the respect of his FTO, and was cut loose on his own to patrol. At the end of the episode, the screen gave a little background on Officer Josh Norris, including that he proposed to his high school sweetheart on July 4th.

After that, his FTO comes on, looking visibly shaken. While responding to a domestic disturbance call a few weeks after being cut loose on the night shift, Josh was fatally shot when a perp opened fire on him upon arrival at the scene. His backup was his FTO, Officer Bostic, who found Josh face down in a pool of blood and unconcious. He stated he heard the shot and then dead silence. It was said that one bullet killed Josh. It was the first time in 11 years a Deputy in Jefferson Parish had died in the line of duty.

Quite a shocking and sad end to that espisode that showed a promising young man who would have grown to become a great police officer.

The Roku Box

Possibly the simplest entertainment device I've ever owned, the "Roku" box, was delivered from Amazon.com yesterday. Extremly easy to set up, it connects to my wireless-n network,and it streams fast downloading a 2 hour movie in less then 45 seconds., This is the TV of the future.The Roku cost $69.00, and there is no reccuring fee for the box.

Through digital media streaming, you can view unlimited movies and TV shows through Netflix and Amazon On Demand. Netflix has an unlimited option which allows you to rent unlimited movies and TV shows for only $8.99 a month.

The Roku has a "Channel Store", where you can add channels to your box. Most of this is streaming internet TV and music, which is really developing and there's tons of interesting content. On top of this, there are many "apps", for photos, etc. My favorite is the one for digital streaming of radio scanners.

This is why I think DVD's are going to die, and unfortunetly Blu-Ray too. Streaming media is the way of the future, and some TV's (Samsung) already have these features built in.

It's still got some things that I would like to see, like the addition of Hulu.com, but this concept is really starting to become popular and I think that is going to drive more available streaming content.

David Draiman Of "Disturbed" now lives in Austin!

My favorite vocalist from my favorite band, David Draiman from Disturbed, has moved here to Austin, TX, according to several sources. The Chicago native, who was born in Brooklyn NY, has said in interviews that he is tired of touring, tired of the Chicago winters, and loves many things about Austin. He cited many reasons for moving here, besides it being the "Live Music Capitol Of The World", the city's friendly, laid back, and unique culture, the nice climate, numerous outdoor activities and scenic beauty, etc.

I'm sure I will see him around, it's a small city. I've heard that he's been seen enjoying the city but also enjoying the respect Austin residents give the many celebrities who call Austin home. Hopefully, he will consider performing in Austin or pop up and do a suprise show like many other famous musicians and bands do. I know he will love life in Austin.

.I'm going to see him in Houston at the Rockstar Uproar Music Festival in October. Can't wait!

We see fire trucks every day, but do we really understand how they work and what's inside? Was I suprised this morning to see that, when I turned on TV, Time Warner FINALLY updated their DVR interface and guide screen to something more modern and that looks a lot cleaner with a more fluid interface, plus some more new features. I guess they are starting to wake up to features found in competitots DVR boxes.....

What's Happened To jetBlue?

Anyone who's followed this blog knew what I loyal fan of jetBlue I used to be.

Now, living in Austin, the only reason I like them is because they fly to JFK direct.

The rest of the airline has gone down the tubes. And everyone I know agrees. I miss the old terminal, the new one is just too big. The flight attendants and staff have become totally apathetc. The TV's don't work half the time or work poorly when they do-one of the main reason I fly them, and all they give you is a $15 credit if they don't work. A credit mind you, not a refund.. The planes are dirty from lack of basic janitorial care and starting to show their age inside. They are constantly delayed. And the worst thing their prices are ridiculous. More then American or Continental.

I guess the freindly staff and crew who care, clean planes, low fares, working TVs, and all they were at the begining is now just memories.

"Southland", the awesome drama about patrol officers working the streets of Los Angeles, which was cancelled by NBC, has been picked up by TNT.

They will start airing the show on January 2nd, starting from the pilot episode and the episodes NBC has already aired. However, they will also be showing the unaired episodes, and depending on ratings, ordering a complete season.
This is a great show, and I'm glad TNT picked it up....I think it will do well on TNT.

My Experience Visiting O'Hare Towing Chicago IL

I just got back from Chicago, what an awesome city! I was truly impressed by the O'Hare operation, and am very grateful for the hospitality of everyone there.

What impressed me the most was how friendly and down to earth EVERYONE employed at O'Hare is- truly not like a typical tow company! It also seems like everyone at O'Hare is truly dedicated to the company and the job. Also, at some point, you could tell everyone really loves Marci and Bill-seems even though they are bosses that the employees are one big family and truly have respect for their bosses. Out of a lot of different operations I have visited, I've never really seen anything like it.

Another thing that impressed me- even though the trucks are well maintained- is that you can tell the trucks earn their living and even though they are beautiful they are primarily functional and very well designed for the tasks they need to do.

I'd like to thanks Jane and everyone else that I met for showing me around and helping me to get some really nice photos despite the not-so-nice weather. What a great experience and I wish I had some more time to spend there.

Another thanks is for all O'Hare does for the towing industry that goes beyond "Wrecked", and I can now visualize how dangerous and tricky being a tow operator in Chicago can be- and O'Hare really is the best at it.

Many of you know how much I love the "Wrecked" show, but I really admire the O'Hare organization more. Season 2 Finale:My Thoughts

The last two episodes of season 2 were basically clip shows, a retrospective of footage we've already seen. Boring and dissapointing. We already knew how they felt, as the show does a great job of explaining each recovery, while the camera documents the crews emotions. Nothing new was really shown.

I would have liked to see more action, like more use of the new Speed Crane for recoveries, or maybe a visit to Miller Industries to see 317 being built. Bill talks a lot about safety, but they should really show all the progressive things O'Hare has and does to keep it's operators safe. Show more of the Northlake facility and what it really takes to keep the trucks on the road. There are so many possibilities for this show then tractor trailer rollovers and winch outs. Hopefully, there will be a Season 3, and we'll delve more into the operation of one of the best towing and recovery operations in the world.

I've already sent my email to North-South productions and SPEED with my thoughts.........

The New jetBlue Terminal 5 At JFK

As many readers of this blog know, I love the airline jetBlue since day 1 and have awaiting the new Terminal 5 for years.

This past weekend, I had the oppurtunity to check out Terminal 5 as both an arriving and departing passenger.

Arriving, the terminal seemed very nice but I didn't have time to stop and check it out....not what I want to do after getting off a flight.

Departing, however, the terminal was an absolute madhouse, and I had to wait in the security line for 1/2 hour. The whole "fast security lanes" they promote is not correct, because most of the lanes were closed...and talking to a TSA agent, Monday morning is the busiest time. The jetBlue staff also herded us and treated us like cattle when we were lined up.

Terminal 5 is very nice, and has some cool features.......but looking around, it is a complete cheap ripoff of Austin's airport design and features. (Austin-Bergstrom International Airport has a BEAUTIFUL terminal, with much more attention to detail and community) I miss the old terminal 4...I thought the modern new terminal would be cool, but in retrospect, and with exception of the satellite terminal, the old terminal was great and I miss it.

My sister was at the Holocaust Musuem today in DC, and she witnessed this whole Holocaust Museum shooting, saw the man (James W. von Brunn) walk in with the gun, the guard engage and get shot, etc. Thank god there are people looking over her, and that she is alright, albeit a bit shaken up, due to the actions of the guards at the musuem.

The reason I am posting this is because the guard, who was killed when he engaged the shooter, is a hero. The shooter, who is 88 and a well-known white supremacist full of hate, and has a long history of spreading his hatred, was stopped because of this guards heroic actions. Unfortunetly, the shooter is still alive in critical condition and is at George Washington University Medical Center.

The shooter is an American terrorist, in my opinion. It's scary that we have people like him in this country still. Hits home now.

To Guard Stephen T. Johns, thank you and may you rest in peace.

Old Settlers Association begins construction on fire engine museum

Members of the old volunteer fire department and members of the Old Settlers Association turn the dirt at a groundbreaking ceremony for a new firehouse museum May 13.

One of Round Rock’s historic icons will finally have a home. A 1938 Ford fire engine that was used by the Round Rock Volunteer Fire Department until the 1970s will be housed in a new vintage-inspired firehouse at the Old Settlers Association grounds at 3300 E. Palm Valley Blvd. in Round Rock. The building will also house an old pump truck used by the fire department, as well as other firehouse memorabilia.

Thursday nights used to be drill nights at Ardsley FD. Reminds me of Ted Knoesel. What an AWESOME guy. I really miss him. I knew him my whole life, and learned a lot from him. He is an Ardsley legacy, one of the last "true" Ardsley people I knew. hope him and Shiela are enjoying heaven.

It's a small village, but there were so many great people in the "old" Ardsley, my grandmother, my father, and so many more, that are now in heaven that I really miss-people who's time on this earth was too short. They really made an impact on me and on this world.

My Local Movie Theater Chain And EMS

Here in Austin, we have this AWESOME movie theater chain. Not only do they show the newly released flicks, but they show a bunch of classics, have fun events like quote-alongs, and the best part- you have a table in front of you and they serve you food from a large menu throughout the movie! And the food is great, too!!

"Southland" is a new show on NBC that airs on Thursday nights.

I think it's one of the best new shows I've seen in a while. It's a drama about the Los Angeles Police Department, the cops, and the victims. I think the show is very well done, kind of similar to "Third Watch"....in fact, the show is produced by the creator/producer of "Third Watch".

What I like most about the show is that it doesn't follow detectives or any elite units, it mainly focuses on the cops on the street, and what they face every day. I think the show is brilliant, and it's not afraid to be gritty and realistic. The show is compelling, and has a "you are there" feel. I hope NBC keeps it on it's lineup.

"Wrecked" On National Geographic Channel

Tonight, the National Geographic Channel (Nat Geo) will be airing episodes of the hit series "Wrecked: Life in the Crash Lane", previously only exclusively shown on the SPEED network.

There will be two, two hour episodes back to back starting at 8PM EST, and re-airing at 11PM EST. Also they will be reairing tommorow at 10AM EST.

This is my favorite show of all time. It's about a family owned towing and recovery business in the Chicago, IL area. They have a fleet of over 70 trucks, and 100 staff. The cameras follow them to some very interesting incidents, and it's fascinating to watch how they handle them.

They specialize in heavy truck recovery, and it's amazing the situations these trucks get into, and O'Hare has to get them out of. They have an awesome fleet including two heavy duty rotators, flatbeds, and everything inbetween. They are very safety oriented. They are very busy, and very fun to watch. There's more to the towing industry then meets the eye, and watching these pro's will prove that.The show's been picked up for a second season starting in May on SPEED.

Update On Austin's New Engine 45

After some digging on the City's website, I found the following information about Austin's New Engine 45 and the two new brush trucks.

This contract is for the purchase two new brush and one new pumper fire trucks
manufactured by Siddons Manufacturing that will be assigned to the Austin Fire
Department. The pumper truck is equipped with a standard foam system, 750 gallon
water tank, 1500 gallon per minute fire pump, and assorted firefighting tools,
hose and equipment. The pumper truck includes a 4-door custom-built crew cab
with a fire pumper body capable of carrying a maximum of six firefighters. The
pumper is capable of pumping water from either a fire hydrant or its own
on-board water tank. The two brush trucks will be built according to National
Wildfire Coordinating Group, Type V specifications and will meet current
National Fire Protection Association standards. These trucks are equipped with a
4x4 crew cab chassis that is capable of seating at least four fire fighters
inside the cab, a 400-gallon water tank with a standard foam pumping system, a
250 gallons per minute pump, tools, hose, and equipment specific to wildland
firefighting. These trucks will be used in various capacities depending on the
size and nature of the fire. One pumper and one brush truck will be assigned to
the new Fire Station 45 serving the Avery area. One brush truck will be assigned
to Fire Station 42 serving the Del Valle area. These are new vehicles to the
City's fire fighting fleet and have an expected use of 15 years before
replacement. These fire trucks are equipped with engines capable of burning
biodiesel (B20) fuel. B20 is a blend of 20% bio-material and 80% petro-diesel.
In line with Austin Climate Protection Program goals, B20 provides an
approximate reduction of 25% of greenhouse gas emissions versus using gasoline,
and an approximate reduction of 5% of greenhouse gas emissions versus using
petro-diesel. The onboard pump engines for the brush trucks also operate on B20.
Siddons Fire Apparatus, Inc is under contract with BuyBoard to supply various
types of fire fighting vehicles statewide as a result of a competitive bidding
process. Utilizing the BuyBoard contract provides for volume discount pricing as
well as the earliest opportunity to get the City’s equipment on order.

Only one of these Engines being delivered currently....no one knows for sure what the four other Engines on order are going to be...with Austin tightening it's belt, and the Quantum's price over the value of a Contender, I think this might spell the end of Austin's Quantums if this Contender holds up.

Loom Up

While driving west on Highway 71 towards Bastrop County, noticed this loom uip from a massive brush fire. 200 acres at the time, heavy winds. Evacuations in progressive and defensive ops- smoke was so thick in area and fire was moving so quicky Kris and I were not in a safe position to photograph it. At time of writing, fire is less then 10% contained, is rapidly expanding, and has consumed 10 homes, 3business, and 4 vehicles.

Wrecked On Nat Geo This Saturday!

This Saturday, February 21st, the National Geographic Channel (Nat Geo) will begin airing episodes of the hit series "Wrecked: Life in the Crash Lane", previously only exclusively shown on the SPEED network.

There will be two half-hour episodes starting at 8PM EST, and re-airing at 11PM EST.
This is my favorite show of all time. It's about a family owned towing and recovery business in the Chicago, IL area. They have a fleet of over 70 trucks, and 100 staff. The cameras follow them to some very interesting incidents, and it's fascinating to watch how they handle them.

They specialize in heavy truck recovery, and it's amazing the situations these trucks get into, and O'Hare has to get them out of.

They have an awesome fleet including two heavy duty rotators.

They are very safety oriented, very busy, and very fun to watch. There's more to the towing industry then meets the eye, and watching these pro's will prove that.

The show's been picked up for a second season starting in May on SPEED, and a diecast version of an O'Hare flatbed is on it's way.

My New Mountain Bike

I have loved to bike in urban areas since I was a teenager. Biking is one of the few forms of excercise that I actually enjoy doing, especially since I love to explore which drives me to pedal farther and farther.

Since my injury, and because of it, I've gained over 40 pounds. Those who knew me knew how skinny I was, and now not so much. On the move down here, the movers couldn't fit my beloved bike, so I haven't taken advantage of the Austin area's numerous cycling oppurtunities.

Since I'm unemployed right now, my mother was kind enough to purchase this mountain bike for me. We have this AWESOME sporting goods chain down here called Academy, and I got it for only $159. It's dual suspension as you can see, and I can't wait to hit the streets and try it out. The brand is Mongoose, and the model is the 26" "Domain". One day, I hope to figure out how to get my beloved Specialized Hard Rock Comp down from NY here to Austin though.

I hope to take my first ride tommorow, and I will keep you all advised. I'm also hoping that I shed some pounds, I really miss being "Sticks".

Not only the fact that he mentioned firefighters in his speech, he didn't use 9/11 or anything general to triumph firefighters or just use it to embelish his speech.......his words, and the entire speech spoke volume and was one of the best I've ever heard. The comment about storming a stairway filled with smoke shows, to me, that he really understands firefighters and their true job, and how firefighters represent true Americans.

Just to let everyone know....Season two is currently being filmed. We are
all excited about it because it has been a crazy winter for us so far. A release
date has NOT been announced, but we have heard rumors of March or May.

Until then though, Speed will be airing repeats regularly and National
Geographic Channel will be airing the series in its entirety starting sometime
in January 2009.

We are also working on getting a Diecast in production, but are still a
couple of months out.

Once I have more info I will be posting it online for people to view and
preorder if interested!

This show, by far, is my favorite show on televison right now. I'm psyched that it will be back for a second season. I think O'Hare is an AWESOME operation and sees some pretty cool incidents.

I vaguely remember reading about this establishment in the NY Daily News a while ago, at the time it was only one resturant in Florida, I believe and battaling NYPD over the name.

My suprise when I was going downtown to check out the new Metro Rail station in Austin that I noticed this, kind of tucked away behind the convention center and large hotel. I'm not sure if it was in business or closed, or opening soon. Tints too dark to see through.

I know some Police Officer's have family who make awesome pies, but I can't see the connection between people who have never even been to NYC and pizza?

3 Years Ago Today, I Was A Firefighter

How life can change so quickly.

Three years ago today, I graduated from the Westchester Career Firefighters Academy Class 03-05, my certificate of completion was presented to me by the Commisioner Of The Department Of Emergency Services, Anthony Sutton. I was proud and humbled to recieve the "Instructors Award" for my enthusiasm and spirit. Most importantly, I had finally acheived the dream of becoming a Hartsdale Firefighter. My goal was to become a firefighter, learn, and slowly work my way up the ranks, like most new probies do.

For the first year, things were exciting. I was learning a ton, salary was great for someone my age, I was going to be getting married, had our first apartment that we owned. I remember my first time driving Engine 170, my first time operating TL-15. Everything was going great until January 27, 2007, when everything changed forever when I was severly injured on department property due to construction negligence.

Although I physically and emotionally suffered tremendously during the time, I fought to recover as quickly as possible to get back on the job.But no matter what I did, obstacles were purposely thrown in my way. Many of you know the story, and I have it well documented for further publication, so I won't get into it here. After all the stuff my family and I were put through, I put it in perspective now.

While the same old Hartsdale dictator, politics and people continue to rule the department with greed and corupption because that's all they have in their lives, I look at my "new" life here in Texas. I have a wife whom I love, two new puppies, a new house, a great job, and I live in an awesome city. My lifestyle down here I definetly wouldn't be able to afford up north. I wouldn't go back to Hartsdale FD if someone was to pay me a million dollars. I feel sorry for the younger guys who have to work in that retirment home. I pray each day for their safety and well being, and hope their climbing the ranks will actually change Hartsdale. Time shall tell wheter they are corrupted and beaten down by the "elders" when they reach that point.

Unlike working at Hartsdale, I actually EARN my living, and make an impact in peoples lives each day. I don't sit around all day, months sometimes, waiting for "the next big one", if there is even one. Because, for me, "the next one" is always there after you clear the ED. I can go home and say that person is alive because of my partner and I. Not once did I say that while working for Hartsdale.

Maybe Hartsdale wasn't the place for me in the grand scheme of things. But I deserved and earned that job, and it was taken unfairly from me, and no one is held accountable for it. They even made it so I could not transfer to another department. They lost a TON of talent when they lost me. That still, and always will, irk me.

30 Degrees

When I left my house this morning, it was 30 degrees out.

When we moved down here, I was hoping to escape the cold!! It was actually warmer in NY today then here in Round Rock!

Still, I don't have to worry about clearing my driveway and car of snow....all I've got to worry about is the already crazy Texas drivers with ice thrown into the equasion!!!! I'm hoping for no precip!

Bruce Granville, 55, of Hartsdale, died tragically on Tuesday, December 12, 2000. He was born on January 31, 1945 in Brooklyn to Harold and Doris Granville. He was raised and educated in Rye. Mr. Granville was a retired police officer with the Village of Ardsley. During and after his retirement he owned and operated Granville Police Products in Hartsdale, a business he ran for over 30 years. On October 22, 1977 Bruce married Susan Cabot in Scarsdale. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and had a great affinity for Harley Davidson Motor Cycles. Most of all, he took care of his family. He was an exceptional father who had a gentle spirit and was very kind. Survivors including his beloved wife Susan are two loving children Seth and Danielle. Bruce is the beloved son-in-law of Rosalind Cabot. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 AM at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Revolutionary Rd., Ardsley. Extreme Trains

As many know, I'm a big fan of trains, mostly commuter.

I discovered this new show, "Extreme Trains", on the History Channel that goes behind the scenes of railroads.

The episodes I've seen are the one that profiles the Amtrak Acela train and route, and a Union Pacific freight train as it travels from Los Angeles to Fort Worth, TX.

For any train fans out there, this show is a MUST!

3AM?

I'm noticing all these "Black Friday" sales starting earlier and earlier each year.....some stores are even opening at 3AM!!

While there are some bargains to be had, it's a little ridiculous to have to get up at 3AM to get them. It's also not fair to the store employees, who have to get up so early on the day after a major holiday and deal with the madness that come along with these sales.

But, I guess opening the stores earlier results in more sales, technically, which must make the books look good.

In Memory Of Lt. Thomas Salvatore II, Empress EMS

As I refelect back on what's happened in Novembers past, I always remember "Tommy Sal".

It's been almost 9 years since his passing. Tommy was a street Paramedic Supervisor for Empress EMS. I worked with him during the early years of my EMS career, back when I was an EMT.

Tommy was alway laid back, friendly, approachable, and a great teacher. I remeber his love for his Supervisor's Tahoe, no matter how much it gave him problems! He always had a great spirit despite the valiant battle with Lupus and the health problems it caused him.

I remember the last time I saw Tommy, it was on a ventilator at Sound Shore Medical Center's ICU, and then at the funeral home across the street from city center.Tommy died of complications from Lupus disease.

His death was a tremendous loss for the Empress EMS family, his own family, fiance, and friends, not to mention the EMS community as a whole.

There's a whole new generation at Empress EMS now who probaly have a whole new set of supervisors. I come from when the old Empress was ending, and the "new" Empress was beginning to emerge. I remember "306 on the back", but there was nothing like hearing "301" on the air.

I reflect on a lot of the EMS lessons he taught me, and to this day remember the wide variety of calls we did together. Tommy's fellow supervisors have gone on to new careers now, but were just as awesome as him. I didn't realize it at the time, but it really was an era. I think about it, especially with all my fellow alumni who are active members of this forum.

Thomas A. Salvatore III died on November 26, 1999 at the age of 33. He was born
in New Rochelle on January 30, 1966, the son of Thomas A. and Janet Longo
Salvatore. He graduated from New Rochelle High School and is a veteran of the

Original Carvel Finally Closes

As detailed in a previous blog entry, the original Carvel has shut down in Hartsdale, and will be demolised in a few weeks to make room for a new(and yet another) japanese steakhouse, according to a banner outside the store.

Also, the closing was mentioned on last week's "Saturday Night Live Weekend Update". It's cool it made it to such a iconic show!!

"Jimmy Boy" Arena: 3 Years

Today marks 3 years since "Jimmy Boy" left this world, leaving our hearts scarred but teaching us many lessons.

Jimmy Boy's spirit is still in my heart, and he was an unbelievable child. And, to this day, his parents work tirelessly while Jimmy Boy looks down from above to turn their tragedy into hope and courage for many other families.

Thoughts and prayers are with the Arena family on this difficult day.

x635: A New Begining

Yes, I've moved to Austin, TX.

To those who are just finding out about this, I was trying to keep it on the down low for a while for personal reasons and hope many of you will understand.

Kris and I are very happy in our new hometown, it's a great place to live and raise a family, and is insanely affordable. Austin is definetly not like the Texas stereotype!! Austin is a very beautiful, vibrant, friendly community with plenty of things to do and see. It is so much more relaxed then Westchester. And no more snow!!!

Although their are certain things I will miss a lot, like my many friends, I'm excited about this new chapter in my life, especially after what I've been through over the past few years.

Don't worry about EMTBravo....I started it in Boston and will continue to administrate from here in Austin and have an excellent NY based staff.

It's very reminiscent of the old "Rescue 911", except it's major focus is on those who are the true first responders.....the men and women who make sure the right people get to the right place at the right time....dispatchers.

The Dark Knight

Last night, Kristen and I went to see the latest installment in the Batman series, "The Dark Knight".

The movie was awesome. Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker made the movie for me, especially considering it was one of the last roles he'd ever play. He was completly in character, unbelievably scary, portraying the Joker as a psychotic mass murder. His peformance was chilling. Christian Bale also plays a great Batman, and the rest of the movie had that typical "Batman cool", even if it didn't have the "Wham" "Pow" sequences.

Volunteering: As American As Apple Pie

I'll be the first to admit that I have some issues with volunteer firefighters and EMT's. I think that their training and fitness levels need to be held to the same level as those who hold the role as career. They also need to be held to the same disciplinary standards as well. And, when they continuously can't get to an emergency in a timely fashion, they need to admit they need help and put pride aside.

However, volunteering is one of the purest forms of being a Patriot. This country was built on people who volunteered to make their country better. Nowadays, we're seeing less and less of that as peoples priorites and focus have shifted.

The volunteer fire and EMS service remains one of the strongest remenants of true community service. Sure, there may be people who do it for self-serving reason, but those people are in the minority. In a volunteer department, you'll find people of all age ranges, from all different backgrounds. I find one of the best parts of the volunteer fire and EMS service is that it introduces young people to community service, and is often the foundation of a solid career path.

Although some volunteer agencies may play up the social club aspect, it's also a great support system for members during times of hardship. Volunteer FF's are usually there for one another regardless, sometimes even more so then the career side.

How many people in your community are actually INVOLVED, actively, continuously, in the improvement of the commununity. Whether you volunteer for your local ambulance corps, or for Habitat For Humanity, it's my feeling that everyone should be obligated to give back to the community and those less fortunate then us.

Greensburg

The "Discovery Home" network has changed it's format, now called "Planet Green". All programing is related to sustainability, and how we can make a smaller impact on our enviroment.

In May 2004, Greensurg, Kansas was struck by an "enhanced" F-5 tornado, one of the largest ever recorded. It wiped out the entire town of 600 people. Homes, schools, Main Street, utilities, everything demolished. Except the Town's resolve.

The town was a typical midwest farming town, struggling to get by before it was wiped out. Living in "FEMville", a village of temporary trailers provided by FEMA, many residents remained with what little they had left and vowed to rebuild Greensburg.

But they took this tragedy and viewed it as a clean slate for the town. They were going to rebuild the entire town. But, it would be "green". With help from international "green" experts, this show will document Greensburg's efforts to become an example to the world that green living is more then just a term.

This 13 episode series, produced by an actor that's using his power to make us more eco-concious, Leonardo DiCaprio, airs Sunday night on Planet Green, formerly Discovery Home. I highly reccomend you tune in, it puts things in check and gives inspiration. From tragedy comes a clean slate, and I'm confident that this series, and this town, will open a lot of minds.

Hartsdale's New Engine 170

Well, I FINALLY found some photos of the new Engine 170, and it looks AWESOME! I really like the in-cab turnout gear storage, and the high visiblity front bumper. It's clear this engine was thought out and designed with the needs of the way Hartsdale operates. I give props for being able to fit a TON of equipment on it, including a CAFS (props for that) AND keep a low hosebed!!!

We Are Marshall

I just finished watching "We Are Marshall", recently released to premium cable after a theater run earlier this year.

EXCELLENT movie! It details the tragedy that Marshall University's football team suffered after a charter plane carrying almost the entire team, coaches, fans, and supporters crashed just short of a West Virginia runway, killing all 75 aboard.

The story documents the tragedy, and how Marshall University rebuilt it's football program after this devastating loss. The story is fascinating.

What I found to be the best part of the movie is that they used real footage. Some people who were involved in this whole ordeal had cameos in the movie. And at the end, they showed the actual person side by side with the actor playing that character.

High Visibilty Makes It To The Crown Vic

First time I've seen high-visiblity striping on a Crown Vic Police Interceptor. It really makes the car stand out.

Kudos to this agency for this progressive move!
